In Michigan, a background check is required for anyone who wants to purchase a firearm. If the purchaser does not have a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) and is purchasing the handgun from a private seller, they will need to complete a “Pistol Sales Record” form RI-60, which is available at the Sheriff’s Office or many local gun shops. The seller and purchaser must each sign the form and the MSP/Registry copy must be turned in to the Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency within 10 days of the date on the purchase receipt.

Once the RI-60 is turned in, the firearm will be registered in the name of the purchaser and the purchaser can then possess the gun. The purchaser will receive a certificate of registration in the mail from the Sheriff’s Office confirming that the pistol has been registered to them. It is important that the information on the RI-60 is correct and legible. If a mistake is discovered, the MSP/Registry copy will be returned to the seller and the handgun will not be registered until the corrected information is provided.

The purchaser can also e-sign their RI-60 digitally with our free online e-signature tool. This makes the process much faster and easier than having to come in and sign by hand! If you are unable to e-sign your RI-60, we do offer fingerprinting at our Fillmore Street location Monday-Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm. Please bring a government issued photo ID and cash notary fee ($5 per notary) for this service.
